WHAT IS TOEFL?

TOEFL, a Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a standardized test taken to measure the English ability of non-natives of English speaking countries.

TOEFL is administered by ETS. The test results are valid for 2 years after it is taken, after which it expires.

This system of test administration was established in 1962 by Dr. Charles A. Ferguson, the linguistic professor of Stanford University; after thirty government and private organizations sat down to address the problem of ensuring English speaking proficiencies of people who wanted to study in US universities.

The test was first administered in 1964 by the Modern Language Association and financed by grants from Ford Foundation and Danforth Foundation.

However, in 1965, the College Board and ETS took over the administration of the test.

ACCEPTED TOEFL SCORES

Most colleges use the TOEFL score as the only factor for their admission process. However, colleges often set a minimum TOEFL score required to gain admission. The minimum for the Internet-Based Test(iBT) score range from 61 to 110.

FORMS FOR TAKING TEST

There are four sections in the TOEFL test. They are:

  • Reading: There are three to four passages, each with approximately 700 words, accompanied by 10 questions for each passage. The passages are mainly academic, the same as the contents you would see in undergraduate test books.

However, prior knowledge of topics under discussion is not necessary to come to the correct answer. The reading section tests your understanding of rhetorical functions such as cause-effect, compare-contrast, and argumentation.

Students are required to answer questions about main ideas, details, inferences, essential information, sentence insertion, vocabulary, rhetorical purpose, and overall ideas. In the new Internet-Based Test, students are required to fill in tables and provide summaries to passages, or parts of the passages.

  • Listening: You are required to have 2-3 conversations with 5 questions asked from each conversation, and 5-7 lectures with 6 questions each. Each conversation is 2 ½ to 3minutes long, and each lecture is 4 ½ to 5 minutes long. The conversation involves a student and a professor, or a campus service provider. The lectures are academically based, and prior knowledge of the topic to be listened to is not necessary. The listening test is mainly to test students’ ability to understand main ideas, important details, implications, and relationships between ideas, organization of information, speaker purpose, and speaker attitude.
  • Speaking: This section consists of 4 tasks. Task 1, which is an independent task, and tasks 2, 3, and 4, which are integrated. In task 1, students are made to answer opinion questions on familiar topics. They are evaluated on their ability to speak fluently, conveying their ideas clearly and coherently.

On tasks 2 and 4, test takers are made to read a short passage, listen to an academic lecture or conversation about campus life, and answer a question by combining relevant information from the passage and the talk.

However, in task 3, students are required to answer questions about what they heard from an academic course lecture they were made to listen to.

In the integrated task, students are evaluated on their ability to organize and effectively convey information from the reading materials or listening sources.

Test takers are allowed to take notes whiles they read or record and may refer to the notes when answering questions. A test taker is entitled to a short period for preparation before they have to begin to speak. All their responses are digitally recorded, sent to ETS’s Online Scoring Network (OSN), and evaluated by 3 to 6 raters.

  • Writing: The writing section also consists of two parts: the integrated and the independent. It is administered to evaluate students’ ability to write in an academic setting.

In the integrated section, test-takers are made to read a passage on an academic topic and then listen to a speaker discuss it afterward. Then, the test-takers are made to write a summary of the relevant portions of the listening passage and explain how they relate to the key points in the reading passage.

In the independent task, the test-taker must write an essay, stating their opinion or choice, and explain it afterward. Responses are sent to ETS OSN and evaluated by at least 3 different raters.

TOEFL GHANA PAPER-DELIVERED TEST

The TOEFL paper-delivered test is the official test for use where there is a deficiency in internet connection or computer issues. It consists of Listening, Reading, and Writing, with the same scores as the internet-based test.

TOEFL GHANA INTERNET-BASED (iBT) TEST

There are 4 sections, each with a score of 0-30 points. The total score for the TOEFL iBT falls within the range of 0-120 points.

It consists of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The reading and listening are tested first, followed by a mandatory ten-minute break. The speaking and writing are then taken after the break.

A maximum amount of 203 minutes is allowed to complete the whole test. Each speaking question is initially given a raw score of 0-4, with a 1 point increment, and each writing question is initially given a raw score of 0.0 to 5.0, with an increment of 0.5 points. In each section, these scores are converted to scale scores of 0-30 points.
